Description

Wizard Nebula NGC7380
is a young open cluster visible in the constellation of Cepheus,
which is about 11,500 light years away from us.
It was first spotted by Caroline Lucretia Herschel in 1787
through a 4.2-inch reflecting telescope, which then reported it to his
brother William Herschel; the latter's son, John Herschel, entered it
in the General Catalog of Nebulae and Clusters with number 2182.
The cluster contains numerous massive stars, enclosed in a diameter of about 6 parsecs;
the main body has an elongated shape, to which a sort of star tail is connected:
this particular appearance could be due in part to the residue of the molecular cloud
origin from which the cluster was formed.
